Reflections

Before doing this ‘Issues in Publication and Design’ assignment, I never set up my blog to share my feeling to people. Through the research of this assignment, it helped me to design my blog better. I understand how to mange the blog accordingly and use the design theory and principles to create my blog. The whole bloggiing process from posting words, image to customizing the layout. Its have taught me a lot of publishing skill. Furthermore, I understand that the writer has the responsibility to write ethically. This new blog can give me a chance to practice what I learn in the lesson. This new experience expanded my knowledge on digital world today.

Good design or not?

Different blogs have different style and design layout. Today I try to use the xanga.com as a example to analyze their design layout.

The xanga.com is using Gutenberg diagram to design the layout. “A Gutenberg diagram can be used to describe the movement of the eyes across the page.” Lidwell, Holden, & Butler, 2003, as cited in Singh, RI, p.2. From the upper left corner of the page to the lower right follow the reader’s natural “eyes gravity”. This approach is according the basic eye movement from primary optical area to the terminal area. The blog are use a Sans-serif font which helps the reader read more easily. Moreover, this blog is mainly focus on using the photographic to attract people attention. Less word is used to explain the post.
This is a good design or not? Different people will have different opinions, but more photographic and less word seems to be a trend in coming online communication system.

Image from facebook.com

Blogging provided a platform to audience who has common interest or particular subject to discuss in a group. Through the hyperlinks, chat room, reply comment, forums etc, audience can be interactive with the blogger. Audience is not only a receiver also a sender at the same time.
According to Wallys W C,(2002) said that ‘Human beings have an inherent desire to communicate, to be part of a community.’ Blogging is one of the communications options.
For example, in the Facebook there are many groups or pages invite user to join. User can base on their interest to choose the particular groups or pages. This approach can connect people together. Blogging can also influence the receiver thinking, just like the people who can influence by their friends in real world.

Privacy problems will kill Facebook?

At the most beginning, when Facebdook is launched to universities in 2004, the membership was limited by the founders. It promised not to share user information unless user approved. But after the privacy changes in Facebook, through the like button will share the user data out to other websites.
According to Diane K. B. (1997) “The Privacy Principles identify three values to govern the way in which personal information is acquired, disclosed and used online: (I) information privacy {an individual's reasonable expectation of privacy regarding access to, and use of his or her personal information should be assured); (2) information integrity (personal information should not be improperly altered or destroyed); and (3) information quality (personal information should be accurate, timely, complete, and relevant to the purposes for which it is provided and used).”
Facebook is a free social networking service to public, their income mostly generates from advertising. They need to maintain the profit which is provided the user information to their advertisers. When the advertisers get the user data, they will analysis and choose their target audience. However, most of the user they don’t know Facebook will leak their personal information to third parties. They don’t have any options to say yes or no. Moreover, we all know that our personal data should be protected seriously in online. Many of online criminal cases were caused by the weak security. Are the facebook having enough security to protect their users?
Are we so used to using technology in our lives but forgot to consider our rights and privacy?

No more hardcover books?

Amazon is a famous online shopping website, from books, magazines, music, DVDs, videos, electronics, computers and software, etc. They are provided a wide range of products to customer and leading the online shopping market. Before, selling books are their main business income. Nowadays, according to Nancy K. H.(2011) noted that ‘In July 2010, Amazon announced that for every 100 hardcover books it sold, the company was selling 180 Kindle books. Its founder and CEO, Jeff Bezos, went on to note that Amazon had sold three times as many Kindle books in the first half of 2010 than it had done in the first half of 2009.’ Kindle books is a new forms of media publishing. This can collect many books in one hand. Although the media change to be technology, the communication system still remains no change. According to Bell and Garrett (1998) noted that ‘when we write, our message is expressed not only linguistically, but also through a visual arrangement of marks on a page.’ Picture and word is always the main focus to communicate with people. Hi-technology is just a platform which convenient to the reader. We should focus on the idea who express from the writer more than the media.

Blogging Life

At the beginning of internet, website was developed rapidly to attract people attention. People are not satisfy only receive the message from online media, they also leave their comments and express their opinions in the website. However, not many people have technique can create their own website. Therefore, blogging was appear in online media.

According to Bonnie.A. N, Diane. J. S, Michelle G. and Luke S (2004) said that ‘Blogs combine the immediacy of up-to-the minute posts, latest first, with a strong sense of the author’s personality, passions, and point of view.’ This is easier way for ordinary people to share or express their point of view. Blogger use the blogging channel to document their lives, criticize the public issue, express the deepest emotions and share the new ideas. Blogging become a part of life for people communicate with friends and family. Although blogging is a good and fast way to reach the community, if blogger use a lot of time to blogging affect their real life, blogging will become bad result of personal life.

Online or Print?

Online media is a form of communication can reach the mass public with lower budget and regarded as a very effective communication system than tradition print media. It seems to dominate the trend of media, but why does the print media still maintain an important role in communication system? Let’s us compare the performance of VLT drinks campaign in the print and online media.

p.1 -2

p.3-4

For the print advertising on p.1 -2, the VLT lemon tea product shot is the main focus on left hand side. Headline and introduction of this campaign is located on the right hand. On p.3-4, there are three models telling the drinking experience of using the new design straw. Moreover, the advertising also promoted the lucky draw.

Image from  http://vlt.com.hk/

For the online website, there is more focus on the lucky draw programme. Customer who bought the VLT product can join the lucky draw directly in website. This is more interactive than the print advertising.
According to Lasica said that (1996, p. 33). “The zeitgeist of the Net–its unifying principle –is centered in interaction and interconnectedness, not ‘I-will-publish, you-will-accept.’ The Net is not a megaphone. The Net is a conversation” Audience will not satisfy to be a receiver in the online media, they have there own choose related to their interest. Furthermore, website can provide more useful information or option to the audience; this can maintain the relationship with their potential customer.
Therefore, website is the good way to communicate with audience, but not the only one channel. If website without the print media support, audience may not know the website address. Message will never delivery to target audience.
